On April 14 the Ojai Retreat invited water conservation expert Tom Ash to explain the severity of our rapidly declining water supply. His detailed presentation included good suggestions and many examples of how much water we use taking showers, flushing toilets and growing gardens etc. What was conspicuous by its absence however was the plethora of statistics about how much water is required to sustain a meat based diet! We did not hear that it requires less than 50 gallons of water to grow one lb. of fruits or vegetables but over 100 times that to put a lb. of beef on our table. After his presentation I discussed this omission with Mr. Ash and he concurred that I had a valid point.
Ten days later at Earth Day, the reputable eco-activist Vandana Shiva, internationally acknowledged for her award winning book: “Stolen Harvest” delivered a robust condemnation for Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s) “Franken-foods”. She excoriated Monsanto for thrustinv onto the market with heartless legal clout “Patented Seeds”.
Vandana received a standing ovation. However India’s most profound scripture, the Srimad Bhagavata Purana, reminds us that despite her sincere efforts they will not check the underlying greed that drives corporations like Monsanto to rise to power. Vandana was also very reticent not to tie our diet to the environment. Instead she carefully stepped around that point by saying only 10% of the harvested corn is used to feed humans instead of the more common statistic that 80% of cultivated corn is used to feed cattle. Was she pandering to her book purchasing fans that accept Environmental activism as their Religion of choice while denying the tremendous damage they do if they patronize the meat industry? Surely a world class authority like Vandana knows that a meat centered diet is far more destructive to the earth than the oil, gas and coal industry combined!

Lord Siva is very aware of the strict Laws of Nature and how they bind us to our material quagmire when violated. If we fail to acknowledge this pivotal point, we can expect more contaminated food, drought, corporate food hording, cheating and international strife etc. That is the consequences for violating one of the most stringent Laws of Nature, heartlessly killing innocent animals.
We don’t need empirical experts promoting partial solutions that are karmically destined to fail. We need fearless bold leaders who will tell us what we need to know about the relentless Laws of Nature. When the public understands our deeper connection to the environment, then the collateral problems that stem from lust, anger, greed, suicide, food shortages, and shameless mega companies like Monsanto and Whole Foods Inc. etc., will automatically be resolved. Only when people know the difference between real knowledge and the ever evolving speculative guesswork promoted under the charade of experimental science can we hope to avoid an environmental holocaust.
