BBT-Edit Controversy

FOR THE RECORD:
The following proposal is suggested as a way to resolve the controversy regarding the editing of the original “Mac72” version of BGAII.

1. The “Mac72” version:
This version of the BGAII was the last original unedited text that Srila Prabhupada spoke and lectured from while still in his manifest form. It is therefore essential that the Mac72 version of the BGAII be published and available for sale by the BBT in perpetuity. This fulfills Srila Prabhupada’s instructions not to change anything and will and it will also remain as the benchmark for historians and future editors of BGAII as the language evolves.

2. The “Current Academic”
Because of the inevitable evolution of the English language, it is necessary for the BBT to produce an edition of the Gita at the highest written standards based on the par-lance of the day.

This is essential so the educated general public will always be attracted to want to understand the essential/purpose of the Bhagavad Gita As It Is. A parallel website should be dedicated to providing explanations for the applied edits. That could be accomplished by discrete, superscripted, foot-notations, or perhaps in a side-by-side page comparison on the web. Publishing this version of the BGAII fulfills Srila Prabhupadas request that his books be presented at the highest possible standard that can be produced for each evolving generation.

3. Additional Versions of BGAII for Target Markets!
We all know Srila Prabhupada’s wept for the plight of the lost conditioned soul. His foremost agenda was to help others penetrate the illusions of this world so they could restore their lost relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna. His desire to do that was so strong he approved of numerous suggestions that would raise the volume of book sales. He blessed the idea of book distributors wearing devotee garb, karmi suits, wigs, and at one point even Santa Clause costumes!

Reputable publishers have pioneered various methods to attract large un-tapped audiences into reading the classics. We could learn a lot from their successful marketing schemes. Advanced devotees should be encouraged to develop special editions of the BGAII for specific markets that might still not be penetrated. Ie: One size does not fit all!

This is already being done every time the BGAII gets translated into a different lan-guage. Many of the compilation books have also been done this way and they have proven to be tremendously successful. We do not attempt to sell a book written in French to a person who only speaks Spanish. How can we expect the 50% of the American public, who can barely read at an 8th grade level, to understand the expan-sive vocabulary Srila Prabhupada’s used in the Mac72 Gita?
