Exposing Byron Kati

Exposing What Is

Article by William Roberts ∙ November 2012

Shortly after I moved to Ojai a friend characterized our little town as the place where intergalactic aliens once landed and left a few behind when they left. It’s hard not to think of this when I learn how many locals willingly abandon sober reasoning to patronize a word juggling shyster offering ludicrous advice.

I realize that making responsible decisions can be stressful, but when I hear Byron Kati’s vacuous advice about: “Loving What Is” I can’t help but wonder what planet her fragile groupies came from?   Due to the ignis fatuus foisted upon the public from New Age ministers the new social norm is to indiscriminately “Respect” everyone regardless of what they believe, say, or do.   “Don’t Be Judgmental” has become the mantra for the morally lazy suffering from avoidance disorder regarding the pragmatic reality that some have earned our love while others should be reported to the police! Should we love the sociopaths who entice our children to take deadly drugs? Should we respect those who rape innocent women, steal our identity or bomb our citizens?   Isn’t the world a better place because Martin Luther King didn’t tolerate the bigotry that was prominent during his day and Bill Gates decided to wage war against international poverty, hunger and disease?

Mrs. Katie’s pseudo-intellectual banter may provide some therapeutic value to those suffering from low self-esteem, depression, volatile personalities, or numerous other emotional imbalances but she is NOT a licensed therapist and her methods are reckless.   She is a shrewd business woman who knew Ojai would be an ideal place to set up shop.   The type of absurd double-talk rhetoric that flows from some of the self-ordained teachers in this town apparently appeals to foreigners from deep space nine, but no sane person takes this type of pedantic mumbo jumbo seriously.

What’s frightening is how many charlatans just ride into Ojai, hang up a sign and then immediately attract a large following of blind sycophants who thoughtlessly accept whatever brand of flummery they preach.   It doesn’t matter if the latest Pied Piper has a history of hypocrisy, depression, antisocial behavior, suicidal tendencies, delusion of grandeur, or even criminal violence. That type of alacrity is eschewed by all of them.

How can any reasonable person take Byron Kati seriously when she admits that her primary qualification for advising others evolved from when she suffered from self-loathing, observed a cockroach crawl across her toe and had the epiphany: “Everything which comes from my mouth is a lie!” Responsible people immediately perceive the solipsism in puerile prattle like: “You know what you are doing is right because you are doing it!” Such imprudent counsel might appeal to the uneducated or carefree, but those who have family members addicted to alcohol, deadly narcotics, hoarding, or prostitution etc., would never appreciate such temerarious sermonizing.

There is an ancient Vedic principle that warns about the phenomena known as: “The Cheaters and the Cheated.”   Some people are so insecure that they will pay obnoxious amounts of money just to be told they are fine, exactly the way they are, foibles, fears, fiends and all! They are so needy that charismatic frauds exploit this opportunity and build a lucrative career telling them exactly what they need to hear regardless of what the truth is.

The whole New Age movement is based on this shameless charade.   Those who want to be cheated are the ones who give money to people like Byron who happily cheat them with profligate statements like: “The result of your thinking doesn’t matter one way or another.”   Weak people need to be reassured that they are always wonderful expressions of God’s love… even when they are still ruled by bad habits, suffer from stinking thinking or are blinded by false pride, apathy or denial.

There are no toll booths on the road to genuine self-realization. Those who are serious about real personal growth know problems are not solved with pity maxims served at expensive seminars but instead require a raw brutal honesty that is rare. That type of wisdom must come from a real erudite sage. There are already too many people making a business out of commercializing their own brand of pseudo-therapeutic spirituality.   Byron preaches that nobody knows what’s true, so what then is she teaching? She can’t share what she doesn’t have.   Her business model simply caters to the fantasies of cash paying patrons that are only interested in being told they are good but aren’t serious about learning how to actually become good.
